Climate change activists are desperate to achieve change before it’s too late. The energy authority in New York is preparing with 40 projects on sustainable energies to supply the area with energy, but environmentalist groups argue that it is not enough.
They are also concerned about the upcoming Donald Trump administration and how it will impact these upcoming projects.
Renewable Energy Projects in New York
The New York State Power Authority (NYPA) announced that they are preparing 40 renewable energy projects in the area, mainly consisting of 32 solar energy projects, 1 wind power park, and 7 battery storage systems. These projects would generate about 3.5 gigawatts of electricity. However, environmentalists explain that this is not enough for them.
Environmentalists’ Concerns
Although these projects would generate a large portion of electricity, the Public Power New York Coalition published a report explaining that these initiatives are not sufficient. According to them, 15 gigawatts should be achieved instead of 3.5 to meet the 70% sustainable energy goal for 2030, set by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act in 2019.
Michael Paulson, president of the Public Power New York Coalition, stated that these initiatives are not enough and are not being implemented quickly enough, especially in the context of the incoming Trump administration, which could launch an attack on renewable energy nationwide.

Demands and Energy Distribution
40 state legislators demanded that NYPA’s clean energy projects generate the required 15 gigawatts. Additionally, they argue that the distribution of energy is not equitable, as there are not as many projects in Hudson and the metropolitan area of New York, where there is higher demand.
Lindsay Kryzak, NYPA spokesperson, announced that the authority will prioritize projects that meet the technical, economic, environmental, and environmental justice needs in the state, reducing costs for taxpayers and maximizing the impact of every dollar spent.
Concerns about Trump’s Administration
Liz Krueger, state senator, explained that there is a tremendous urgency to achieve these climate change goals due to the upcoming Trump administration, who announced he would dismantle the carbon emission regulations imposed by outgoing President Joe Biden.
Krueger emphasized that the state of New York needs to act faster and on a larger scale to confront this new threat.
