Last year marked a milestone in the global energy transition, with **92.5%** of all new installed electricity coming from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and other clean energies, according to the [International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)](https://noticiasambientales.com/innovacion/empleos-verdes-las-demandas-y-oportunidades-de-la-transicion-energetica/).
This advancement reflects unprecedented growth, although still insufficient to meet international goals.
### Key figures from the renewable energy report
– **Global installed capacity**: **585,000 megawatts** of new renewable energy were added, a **15.1%** increase from 2023.
– **China** represented **64%** of the new installed capacity. It added **374,000 megawatts**, mainly from solar panels. Its total solar panel capacity reached **887,000 megawatts**, surpassing by far the United States (**176,000 megawatts**) and Germany (**90,000 megawatts**).
– **Global contribution**: **46%** of the world’s electricity came from non-nuclear renewable sources.
### Challenges to triple renewables
Despite the growth, the world is **28%** below the target to triple renewable energies between 2023 and 2030, a key commitment to curb climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
– **António Guterres**, UN Secretary-General, highlighted that renewables are transforming the global economy but urged to accelerate and make the energy transition fairer.
– **Simon Stiell**, head of the United Nations Climate Office, challenged Europe and other industrialized countries to match China’s leadership in renewable energies.
### The green energy market
The rise of renewables boosted the global green energy market to a value of **$2 trillion** in 2024. Analysts like **Neil Grant** from Climate Analytics emphasize that this growth could be further accelerated with comprehensive and ambitious climate policies.
