The Gran Chaco, one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, covers over 1 million square kilometers spread across Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay.

It is home to 3,400 plant species, 500 bird species, and over 200 species of reptiles and amphibians. This territory is also a key economic driver due to its soy and livestock production, but it faces increasing threats due to agricultural expansion.

Opportunity for a Sustainable Future

According to the recent report by Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA) titled “The Gran Chaco: Pathways Towards a Sustainable Future”, the Gran Chaco has the potential to balance economic growth with environmental conservation and lead in practices such as regenerative agriculture and sustainable livestock farming.

Meat Industry: Great potential to improve soil health, biodiversity, and efficient water use, generating a positive environmental impact.

Ecotourism: Proposal to establish private natural reserves linked to state-protected areas. Ecological corridors that facilitate wildlife movement and promote sustainable activities like ecotourism.

A Call to Action

Jack Hurd, CEO of TFA, emphasized that with appropriate investments, policies, and partnerships, the Gran Chaco could become a global model for reconciling agricultural production with environmental management.

Key to achieving this is collaboration among governments, businesses, NGOs, and multilateral organizations.

Proposed Benefits

  • Biodiversity Conservation: Projects that promote local biodiversity and protect wildlife.
  • Sustainable Economic Development: Long-term job creation through activities like ecotourism.
  • Productive Resilience: Balance between the growing global food demand and environmental protection.

The Future of Gran Chaco

The report highlights the importance of prioritizing the future of Gran Chaco, establishing it as a productive, resilient, and biodiverse landscape for future generations.
