Trump reduces offshore wind energy in the U.S. and favors natural gas with a $2.6 billion investment and cancellation of tenders

Donald Trump has implemented a decisive shift in the United States’ energy policy, slowing the advancement of offshore wind energy in favor of natural gas. This measure has entailed an expenditure of nearly 2.6 billion dollars to undo concessions granted during Joe Biden’s administration.

Trump halts offshore wind energy to boost natural gas

The change in energy strategy by the Republican administration has intensified the focus on natural gas, while receiving criticism from environmental groups and states led by Democrats. In this context, the White House has prioritized the reversal of concessions for offshore wind projects.

A crucial part of this decision includes the rescission of four maritime bids linked to the development of wind farms in the waters of New York, California, and Maine. The U.S. government agreed with the company Invenergy on a reimbursement of 765 million dollars, slightly less than what was initially paid under the previous administration.

This change of direction aims to dismantle previous plans, restricting permits for renewable infrastructures on U.S. coasts. Such an approach consolidates a policy that prioritizes energies considered more reliable by the Trump administration.

The consequences of this policy include the suspension of federal permits that halted the advancement of offshore wind projects, many of which were in the early stages of development.

The funds obtained by Invenergy after the return of the concessions will be partially allocated to natural gas projects in the Midwest, along with geothermal energy initiatives, in line with current energy priorities.

The cancellation of these initiatives has sparked criticism from environmental groups, who argue that it hinders the energy transition and the fulfillment of climate goals. Additionally, it has generated concern among Democratic states questioning the use of public funds to dismantle previously approved projects.

This move marks a significant change in the direction of energy policy in the United States, increasing the prominence of natural gas while halting the development of a key renewable technology. The potential effects include a slower pace in the transition towards a more sustainable energy system.
