Artificial intelligence becomes an essential ally for saving the oceans in a new era of marine protection

According to the Marine Conservation Institute, only 3% of the world’s ocean is truly protected from extractive activities such as industrial fishing or underwater mining. However, the world faces the great challenge of reaching the “30×30” goal: protecting 30% of the seas before the year 2030.

In this context, Vital Oceans emerges, an initiative driven by C Minds in collaboration with Red Hat and Alquimia AI, which uses artificial intelligence to accelerate the creation of Marine Protected Areas. This tool represents a crucial advance towards faster, more inclusive, and accessible conservation.

The platform employs open AI models to automate the creation of scientific and legal documentation, reducing processes that previously took months to just minutes. Additionally, it integrates knowledge from marine science, blue economy, and traditional wisdom, ensuring that local communities are protagonists in the design and management of their own protected areas.

Currently, Vital Oceans is already supporting the creation of five Marine Protected Areas in Baja California, Mexico. Its next step will be to expand the technology throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting a regional conservation movement based on innovation and community leadership.

AI as an ally of marine ecosystems

The use of artificial intelligence for ocean protection represents a revolution in environmental management. These tools allow processing large volumes of data on biodiversity, currents, temperature, and pollution, facilitating faster and more accurate decision-making.

Another advantage is the reduction of costs and times: research, which previously required months of scientific expeditions and manual analyses, can now be conducted in a matter of hours. This democratizes access to environmental science and allows coastal communities to lead projects with scientific quality information.
