California loses 60% of coastal dunes since the 19th century, affecting protected species and local biodiversity

The coastal dunes of California not only beautify the landscape but also play a vital role as a natural barrier against the Pacific Ocean. A recent study revealed that these formations have decreased by almost 60% since the 19th century. This loss poses serious implications for biodiversity and coastal communities.

Loss of coastal dunes impacts protected species

The decrease in dunes directly affects local fauna, beaches, and nearby human communities. Much of this retreat is due to urbanization and land use changes, which have disrupted the continuity of these formations.

The study, which covers an analysis of 165 years of changes along the 1625 kilometers of the California coast, shows that in the mid-19th century, the dunes covered 739 square kilometers. In comparison, by 2016, these had been reduced to about 300 square kilometers.

The research methods included digitizing 140 historical topographic maps, aerial images, and LiDAR technology. Scientists also conducted field visits to validate their findings.

Regional differences are notable. While Southern California has lost approximately 95% of its historical dune area, the central region has seen a 60% reduction. In the north, the loss has been smaller, around 3%, although the dunes there are not necessarily in better condition.

In areas like Los Angeles and San Francisco, the transformation is particularly evident. According to Kyle Emery from the Marine Science Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the magnitude of the loss in these cities has been significant.

The number of dune fragments has increased from 232 to 339, but their average size has dramatically decreased, indicating a fragmented ecosystem. This fragmentation makes the dunes less effective as natural defenses against erosion and flooding.

Despite these challenges, there are areas where dunes have grown, adding approximately 15.2 square kilometers of new habitat. However, these gains are minimal compared to the total loss of 442 square kilometers.

Restoring these formations is possible, though complex, and depends on various factors, such as the availability of sand and the control of human pressure. The full study has been published in the journal Earth’s Future and offers a new inventory to guide future conservation efforts.
