Chile is the first Latin American country to exhaust its natural resources and enters Ecological Overshoot 2026

This Thursday, Chile became the first country in Latin America to enter ecological overshoot 2026 and officially reach its annual biological limit, positioning it once again as the first country in Latin America to enter environmental deficit.

This means that, in less than five months, the nation has consumed all the natural resources that the Earth is capable of regenerating in a one-year cycle.

An unsustainable consumption rate

According to data from the Earth Overshoot Day network, the pressure on Chilean ecosystems is critical. The indicator reveals an alarming reality:

  • Regeneration capacity: As of today, the country consumes more than what nature produces and emits more CO2 than forests and oceans can absorb.

  • Ecological Footprint: If all of humanity lived like an average Chilean citizen, 2.9 Earth planets would be needed to sustain that level of demand.

  • Regional Context: In the continent, Chile is only surpassed by Canada and the United States, which exhausted their natural budget in March.

“Time is up”: Intervention in Valparaíso

To raise awareness about this exhausted nature budget, the organization Escazú Ahora carried out a striking urban intervention at the Turri Clock, in the historic center of Valparaíso.

Activists unfurled a 13-meter banner with the slogan «Time is up», aiming to bring the crisis from technical reports into the everyday discussion of citizens.

Ricardo Bosshard, director of WWF Chile, stated that although these indicators are approximations, they represent the most robust trends to understand the urgency of the climate crisis and the need for sustainability policies to curb this structural environmental deficit.
