Complaint about the management of the Paraná Waterway: demand for an environmental assessment

Most read

Environmental and social organizations have filed an administrative claim before the National Agency of Ports and Navigation, demanding a strategic environmental impact assessment that includes active participation from the citizenry.

This new chapter in opposition to the current management model of the Paraná Waterway seeks to ensure a more inclusive and sustainable approach.

## A first step in a historical struggle
Martha Arriola, coordinator of the “Caretaker of the Common Home” space, highlighted in an interview with the Elonce portal that this claim represents a first step or the continuity of a historical struggle.

According to her, the objective is to bring the concerns of the people to the corresponding institutional channels, opening a legal path to address the environmental and social issues related to the Waterway.

## Criticisms of the current discussion model
The claim includes a direct criticism of the way the discussions about the Waterway are being conducted. Arriola denounced that the meetings held in spaces like the Stock Exchange and the Nestor Kirchner Cultural Center exclude the organized people, who have a lot to contribute to this issue.

The document presented by the organizations demands:
1. A strategic and cumulative environmental impact assessment.
2. Clear mechanisms for public consultation to ensure citizen participation.

Additionally, Arriola warned about measures already being implemented, such as dredging maneuvers in the Paraná River. These are reportedly being carried out without prior consultation or studies, raising concerns about the environmental impact and lack of transparency.

## Defense of the Paraná River and its ecosystem
The protection of the Paraná River, its ecosystem, and the citizen’s right to voice their opinions on its management remains a flag raised by organizations across the country.

This claim aims to open an institutional and legal channel to halt what they consider an exclusionary and environmentally risky policy.
