Córdoba and a key agreement for environmental conservation in the Punilla Valley: they will protect one of the most important green lungs.

Environmental conservation in Córdoba: a key agreement

In a fundamental step for environmental conservation, the Government of Córdoba and the Argentine Army signed a historic agreement to protect the La Defensa Natural Reserve.

It is located between the towns of La Calera and Valle Hermoso, in the heart of the Punilla Valley.

It is one of the last green lungs of the biogeographical corridor of the Chaco Serrano, crucial for the preservation of native species and essential ecosystem services.

This agreement will allow the conservation of more than 5000 hectares of native forest, ensuring its use exclusively for ecological, scientific, and educational purposes.

The area is part of a strategic ecosystem that connects the mountains of Córdoba with other regions of the country and is seriously threatened by urbanization, forest fires, and habitat fragmentation.

La Defensa Natural Reserve: a natural treasure at risk

The La Defensa Natural Reserve encompasses territory belonging to the Argentine Army and has been recognized for its high environmental value. Endangered species of flora and fauna inhabit this area, and its conservation is vital to maintain the ecological connectivity of the Chaco Serrano.

The area is part of a green corridor that allows the movement of animals and the genetic conservation of different species.

Through the agreement, the Army grants the use of the territory for activities that promote environmental education, scientific research, and ecological restoration. This prevents it from being used for real estate developments or extractive activities.

A joint commitment to the environment

The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Environment and Circular Economy of Córdoba and Army authorities, with the support of environmental organizations and biodiversity experts.

This public-military partnership is presented as a model of collaborative environmental management, where national defense and nature conservation can coexist and mutually reinforce each other.

This measure is part of a broader plan by the provincial government to strengthen the network of protected areas in Córdoba, which currently cover less than 4% of the territory, far from the 17% recommended by international standards.

With this agreement, Córdoba advances in the recovery of its native forests, whose surface has been drastically reduced in recent decades.

Preserving spaces like La Defensa not only protects biodiversity but also mitigates the impact of climate change, regulates the water cycle, and prevents soil erosion.

Furthermore, the reserve can be used for environmental education activities, interpretive walks, species monitoring, and low-impact scientific practices. Thus promoting sustainable and educational tourism.

A precedent that could be replicated

Environmental organizations celebrated the signing of the agreement and highlighted its potential to become a replicable model in other Argentine provinces.
