Deforestation in the Colombian Amazon decreases by 25% during the first quarter of 2024

The Ministry of Environment reports a downward trend in deforestation in the Amazon and loss of forest, highlighting advances in the protection of the ecosystem, the country’s most important.

Deforestation in the Colombian Amazon experienced a reduction of 25% during the first three months of 2024, according to official data presented by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.

This figure represents a significant advance in the National Government’s conservation goals, consolidating a decreasing trend in the destruction of vegetative layers in critical points of the Amazonian biome compared to the same period last year.

The Minister of Environment, Susana Muhamad, pointed out that this decline is the result of a comprehensive strategy that combines territorial control with the strengthening of conservation agreements with local communities.

Departments that have historically recorded the highest rates of logging and burning, such as Caquetá, Guaviare, and Meta, showed a moderation in the loss of hectares, suggesting a positive response to environmental services incentive programs.

Deforestation rate decreases in the Colombian Amazon

Despite the optimism over the first quarter results, environmental authorities maintain constant vigilance. It has been identified that climatic factors, such as the El Niño phenomenon, and public order variables remain determining challenges for the stability of these figures for the rest of the year.

The government emphasized that the goal is not only to reduce the rate of logging but to achieve a net zero deforestation rate in the coming decades.

The technical report on deforestation in the Colombian Amazon also highlights the importance of international cooperation and the financing of sustainable projects that offer economic alternatives to the region’s inhabitants.

The transition to lawful and environmentally friendly economies is emerging as the most effective tool to curb the expansion of the agricultural frontier and extensive livestock farming, the main drivers of forest degradation.

Finally, the Ministry of Environment called for vigilance, reminding that the drought period is often exploited for illegal land grabbing activities.

Satellite monitoring will continue to be a key component in the early identification of heat spots and new interventions in protected reserve areas, to ensure that deforestation in the Colombian Amazon maintains its downward trajectory.
