Frigerio supports the relocation of a green hydrogen plant in Paysandú

The governor of Entre Ríos, Rogelio Frigerio, expressed his support for the request of the Tierra de Palmares Commonwealth, composed of mayors and communal presidents from various towns in Entre Ríos, for the relocation of the green hydrogen production and synthetic fuels plant projected by HIF Global in Paysandú, Uruguay. The petition arises from concerns about the possible negative impacts that the plant could generate on the environment and the region’s tourism activity.

Local authorities argue that the installation of the plant will directly affect tourism, the main economic activity in the area, due to visual pollution and potential emissions. In a joint statement, representatives from municipalities in the departments of Colón and San Salvador urged that the project be located in an area where it does not cause environmental or economic harm.

While acknowledging Uruguay’s sovereignty in deciding on its territory, Entre Ríos leaders emphasize that the plant’s proximity to the region could have direct consequences for riverside communities. For this reason, they consider it essential for the Uruguayan government and investors to take their concerns into account before proceeding with the project installation.

Green hydrogen plant, a commitment to the environment

Given this situation, Frigerio instructed the relevant areas of the Entre Ríos Government to initiate the necessary procedures to activate the consultation mechanism provided for in the Uruguay River Statute, within the framework of the Uruguay River Administrative Commission (CARU). The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that the population potentially affected by the plant installation has access to relevant environmental information and can voice their concerns.

The Entre Ríos Government reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development of the region. “It is essential to listen to local communities and ensure that any large-scale project is implemented harmoniously, without affecting the environmental balance or the population’s livelihood,” stated the provincial administration. With this initiative, the province seeks to ensure economic growth compatible with the conservation of natural resources and the well-being of its inhabitants.

Green hydrogen plants are gaining ground

These plants are characterized by using renewable energies, such as solar or wind, in their facilities and hydrogen production. For this reason, this method of hydrogen generation stands out for not emitting carbon dioxide.

In these facilities, the hydrogen produced is used as an energy vector, and the energy used in the process is renewable. They also have the capacity to produce about 10,000 tons of hydrogen per day, and 20,000 tons of ammonia per year, reducing 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Currently, hydrogen is stored in liquid state, using special tanks at very low temperatures or high pressure. Both methods require large amounts of energy and may involve the use of chemicals harmful to the environment.
