Jellyfish invade Mar del Plata beaches and link the phenomenon to sea warming: how to protect yourself

The appearance of jellyfish in Mar del Plata has caused concern among tourists and residents during this summer season.

The sighting of these marine organisms near the shore has increased in recent weeks. The lifeguards linked the phenomenon to water temperatures higher than usual.

The city is facing a growth in the appearance of jellyfish near the coast. This phenomenon is related to environmental conditions that favor their reproduction and approach.

Warmer water favors the proliferation of jellyfish in Mar del Plata

In recent days, lifeguards from different beaches have observed an increase in the number of jellyfish in Mar del Plata.

The most affected areas include sectors such as Punta Mogotes, where the concentration is notable.

According to recent measurements, the sea is several degrees above the historical average for this time of year. Records exceeded 22 °C compared to usual values of around 19 °C.

These organisms —also called “jellyfish”— move with the currents and the wind. However, higher temperatures favor their proliferation and approach to bathing areas.

“The context of a warmer than usual sea intensifies their appearance,” noted the lifeguards. The jellyfish do not deliberately attack, but their concentration in areas with little waves increases the chances of contact.

The authorities recommended paying attention to the signals and flags on the beaches. They also suggested considering alternative options when jellyfish in Mar del Plata are observed.

How to act in case of a sting

Jellyfish have tentacles with specialized stinging cells to capture food. These cells release toxins when they come into contact with human skin.

The sting causes sensations of burning, redness, itching, and burning in the affected area. According to health specialists, reactions are usually limited to local irritation.

In most cases, stings do not pose a serious risk to health. However, they can be bothersome, especially for people with sensitive skin or children.

In case of contact with jellyfish in Mar del Plata, specialists recommend:

  • Leave the water immediately and avoid rubbing the affected area
  • Rinse with seawater —never with fresh water— to remove tentacle remnants
  • Apply local cold to relieve pain
  • Use vinegar if available, to neutralize the action of the toxins

Lifeguards reminded that tentacles should not be touched, even if they appear dead. They can still release toxins even out of the water.

It is advised to consult a health professional if discomfort persists. In case of severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, or significant swelling, immediate medical attention should be sought.

Prevention and recommendations in case of jellyfish stings

The authorities suggested practical measures to reduce the chances of contact with jellyfish. Paying attention to the lifeguards is essential, as they monitor conditions in real time.

If organisms are observed on the shore or floating in the water, it is advisable to avoid swimming. Using protection on the skin, such as UV shirts or neoprene suits, limits direct contact.

Entering the sea with caution is especially important on days with little waves. In these conditions, jellyfish tend to concentrate closer to the beach.

These natural phenomena are part of the marine ecosystem dynamics. They reflect the interaction between environmental conditions and coastal organisms in the Atlantic.
