An oil spill that occurred in the last hours is causing strong concern in Peru. It was due to an accident on the Binacional highway, at the Tumilaca bridge in the district of Torata. This led to a considerable environmental crisis.

A tanker truck from Bolivia, loaded with more than 10,000 gallons of oil, overturned and spilled a large part of its contents into the river.

Both the local residents and authorities remain on alert due to the implications for the flora, fauna, and agricultural activity.

The regional governor of Moquegua, Lilia Gutiérrez, led an emergency meeting with authorities, Civil Defense representatives, and specialized technicians.

As reported, the initial actions included closing the gates for drinking water supply. They aim to mitigate contamination in districts like Samegua and nearby populated areas.

In this regard, the company EPS Moquegua S.A. informed that the supply of drinking water will be temporarily interrupted in locations such as Chen Chen, Los Ángeles, and the Jardines de Villa housing complex in Samegua.

According to the company’s operations manager, tanker trucks will be deployed to supply those affected while the necessary studies are conducted to restore the service.

Additionally, the distribution of water through tanker trucks was arranged to ensure basic supply to those affected.

In the oil spill area, teams from the Regional Government and entities like the Special Project Pasto Grande and the Natural Resources Management have been working since the early hours to assess the damages and determine the extent of the spill.

The Regional Agriculture Directorate also attended to coordinate with farmers, who expressed their concerns about the long-term effects on crops.
