Promote forest restoration courses in Patagonia in response to fires and the climate crisis

After the record fires of the summer in La Comarca Andina, UTT Patagonia launched the first course of “Forest Restorer”. In this way, the initiative proposes moving from emergency to action with a comprehensive ecological perspective.

Likewise, the proposal was realized through an agreement with the Escuela Agrotécnica 717 in Lago Puelo. Consequently, more than a hundred people began training oriented towards the recovery of the native forest.

Furthermore, the interest exceeded all expectations, with hundreds of registrants from different parts of the region. Therefore, the course is consolidated as a key tool in the face of the environmental crisis.

A collective response from the territory

In parallel, the experience is enriched by the work of community brigades that faced fires like the one in Mallín Ahogado and the outbreaks in Puerto Patriada and Epuyén. Thus, practical knowledge is integrated with technical training.

On the other hand, the organized community positions itself as a protagonist in the management of the territory. In this sense, the objective is to advance from fire containment towards prevention and restoration.

Similarly, the proposal seeks to consolidate a trade linked to environmental care. Consequently, it opens a job alternative in a context of growing ecological degradation.

Contents and knowledge to restore the native forest

The course is structured in modules that address essential concepts such as the functioning of the forest, disturbances, and restoration strategies. Firstly, it promotes reading the landscape to intervene appropriately.

Additionally, seed collection techniques, reproduction of native species, and seedling production are worked on. In this way, practical knowledge applied to the territory is strengthened.

On the other hand, the accumulated experience in reforestation projects, such as those carried out on Cerro Currumahuida, is incorporated. Thus, scientific and community knowledge are articulated in the same learning space.

What are the environmental and social benefits of the initiative?

The training in forest restoration provides multiple benefits to the ecosystem. Firstly, it allows the recovery of the Andean Patagonian forest, key for water regulation and soil conservation.

Likewise, it contributes to preventing future fires through sustainable management practices. Consequently, the vulnerability of territories to extreme events is reduced.

Moreover, the initiative strengthens the social fabric by promoting community participation. In this way, collaborative work networks are generated that drive local solutions to global problems.

Historical challenges and restoration with native species

In contrast, the expansion of exotic species like the ponderosa pine has generated negative impacts in the region. Indeed, these plantations increase the risk of fires and affect biodiversity.

Therefore, restoration with native species such as cypress, coihue, and lenga presents itself as a fundamental strategy. Thus, ecological functions developed over thousands of years are recovered.

Finally, in the face of the loss of thousands of hectares between Bariloche and Esquel, community training emerges as a concrete response. Consequently, a path towards environmental resilience and landscape reconstruction is consolidated.
