United Nations (UN) has called on governments to reduce “drastically” emissions by 2025 after a decade of “deadly heat”, being the last ten years the hottest in history.
This call comes on the occasion of the New Year, pointing out the urgency of a radical change in environmental policies.
2025: a renewable and safe future
“In 2025, countries must put the world on a safer path by drastically reducing emissions and supporting the transition to a renewable future. It is essential and possible,” stated António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN.
Guterres warns that there is no time to lose and highlights the hope he sees in activists, young and old, raising their voices for progress.
Building peace and preventing war
The Secretary-General has also emphasized the new drive to build peace, disarm, and prevent war. “I see hope in humanitarian heroes, overcoming enormous obstacles to support the most vulnerable. I see hope in countries that are developing, fighting for financial and climate justice,” stated Guterres.
The pact adopted last September by world leaders, according to Guterres, represents an opportunity to reform the global financial system and push for more opportunities for women and young people.
“There are no guarantees for what is to come in 2025, but I promise to stand with all those working to build a more peaceful, equal, stable, and just future for all people. Together we can make 2025 a new beginning. Not as a divided world, but as United Nations,” concluded Guterres.
