An air mass of Antarctic origin will bring the coldest day of the year, causing a sharp drop in temperatures over the next few days in much of Argentina.
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) warned that this week the lowest temperatures so far in 2026 will be recorded in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), with values up to 10 degrees below normal. In addition, intense frosts and a very low wind chill are expected.
What will be the coldest day of the year in the AMBA?
Although the peak of the polar wave nationwide will occur between Wednesday, July 1 and Thursday, July 2, the SMN forecasts that Friday, July 3 will be the coldest day of the year in Buenos Aires.
-
City of Buenos Aires and northern suburbs: Temperatures of 1 °C minimum are expected.
-
Southern Buenos Aires areas: Thermometers will show values below 0 °C.
-
Localities affected by intense frosts: Quilmes, Berazategui, Ezeiza, and Cañuelas, among others.
The southwest wind will make the wind chill considerably lower than the actual temperature. During the afternoons, the environment will remain very cold and the maximums will not exceed 12 °C.
Alert for snow and sleet
The advance of this polar air will also create conditions for snowfalls in different parts of the country. In the province of Buenos Aires, specialists are closely monitoring the southeast of Buenos Aires, where light snowfalls or sleet could occur, especially in the mountainous areas and sectors near the limits of the AMBA.
