Wildfires: a campaign that strengthens prevention and calls on citizens to protect the Patagonian forests

The summer season once again tests the Andean forests. Faced with the increased risk of fires, the Río Negro Government launched a prevention campaign in Bariloche with a clear message: preparation exists, but it is not enough without social commitment.

From the Andean Zone, authorities emphasized the importance of respecting the total ban on making fires. Community vigilance and early warning of any smoke column are key to avoiding disasters.

The message aims to install a simple and powerful idea: prevention begins before the fire appears, and each person can make a difference with responsible actions.

Institutional coordination to anticipate risk

The launch of the campaign took place within the framework of a strategic meeting between Province and Municipality. The objective was to unify criteria, update protocols, and strengthen the emergency response.

The joint work includes provincial, municipal, and national agencies. Advanced planning allows for reduced reaction times and protects both communities and ecosystems.

This comprehensive scheme targets a high-risk summer, where prevention and coordination are as important as the direct fight against fire.

More technology to protect the forest

In recent years, a deep modernization of the prevention system and firefighting has been promoted. The SPLIF incorporated real-time monitoring tools and equipment for the initial attack.

Mobility was reinforced with vehicles adapted to complex terrains and specific machinery for hard-to-reach areas. This allows for quicker action against incipient outbreaks.

In addition, new technologies such as drones, thermal viewers, and mobile command centers improve operational precision and coordination on the ground.

The key role of citizen participation

The protection of forests does not depend solely on brigades and technology. Citizen participation directly reduces the number of fires caused by negligence or intentional actions.

Reporting dangerous practices, respecting restrictions, and alerting in time allows for containing outbreaks before they become large-scale fires. The community acts as the first alert system.

Furthermore, participation strengthens the sense of belonging and care for the territory. When the population gets involved, prevention ceases to be an imposed norm and becomes a collective commitment.

How to encourage environmental commitment

Environmental education is a central tool to promote responsible behaviors. Clear, accessible, and sustained campaigns help transform everyday habits.

Participation also grows when people feel their contribution is valued. Recognizing the role of neighbors, volunteer brigades, and local organizations strengthens the network of care.

Involving schools, clubs, and communities in preventive actions consolidates an active environmental culture, where protecting the forest is a shared and permanent responsibility.
