Unstoppable: Electric vehicle sales in Argentina grow by 86% in 2025

The country experiences a notable increase in the sale of electric vehicles in Argentina, although their market share in the automotive sector remains minimal.

Despite the growing interest, the country still faces significant challenges in transforming its mobility system towards more sustainable options.

During 2025, sales of hybrid vehicles increased by 63.3% and electric vehicles by 86.6%. However, these models represent only 0.5% of a vehicle fleet that amounts to 15.7 million vehicles, reflecting limited progress against the dominance of traditional fossil fuel cars.

Interest in more ecological vehicles has increased, driven by greater environmental awareness and the desire to reduce fuel costs in an unstable economic context.

Adding to this are the introduction of new brands and technologies, as well as incentives that promote sustainable mobility.

Despite these advances, significant barriers persist. Most hybrids in Argentina are imported, with brands like Toyota and Ford leading the market.

This dependence on imports limits the development of a robust local industry in electric mobility and economic barriers hinder its mass adoption.

National production of hybrid models began in September 2024 with Stellantis manufacturing the Peugeot 208 and 2008 hybrids in El Palomar, although mostly for the Brazilian market.

This initiative marks a step towards local industrialization, but its impact remains limited in the domestic market.

Electric vehicles in Argentina

The increase in sales of electrified vehicles reflects a potential trend change within the Argentine automotive market.

However, the high price, lack of adequate charging infrastructure, and the need for effective public policies are critical factors to accelerate this transition.

In conclusion, although Argentina shows an increase in sales of electric and hybrid cars, there is still a long way to go for these alternatives to consolidate in the market.

The country is just beginning to lay the groundwork for a transition towards more sustainable mobility.
