YPF launches safer and lighter plastic cylinders: details of the pilot test in Argentine homes

The company YPF Gas introduced its new plastic cylinders for domestic use in 2026, an innovation in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market.

The initiative began with a pilot test in five distributors in the province of Buenos Aires, aiming to evaluate user acceptance before deciding on their definitive incorporation into the product portfolio.

Technical characteristics and advantages

The containers are made with fiberglass and resins, covered by a high-resistance plastic structure. Among their main attributes are:

  • Reduced weight: up to 65% lighter than conventional steel cylinders (about 7.5 kg when empty).
  • Translucent body: allows visualization of the remaining gas level, facilitating replacement planning.
  • Increased safety: they eliminate the risk of explosion due to extreme pressure in case of fire, avoiding the BLEVE effect.
  • Durability and sustainability: they are 100% recyclable, do not rust or corrode, and require less maintenance.

This domestic model is a smaller version of the plastic container launched in 2021 for industrial use in forklifts, which served as a precedent for this new stage.

Certifications and sustainability

The cylinders have international certifications such as ISO 9001 and EN 14427, guaranteeing quality and safety standards.

Their recyclable and corrosion-free design makes them a more sustainable alternative, aligned with the trend towards products that reduce environmental impact.

Social impact and ergonomics

The innovation seeks to improve the experience of millions of households that depend on bottled gas:

  • Ease of transport and handling: being lighter, they reduce the risk of injuries and facilitate logistics.
  • Optimization of domestic safety: by eliminating explosion risks, they offer greater peace of mind to users.
  • Modernization of energy consumption: they represent a significant advancement over traditional steel containers.

Context of energy subsidies

The launch coincides with changes in subsidy policy. The National Government eliminated the Home Plan and launched the Focused Energy Subsidy System (SEF). This new scheme applies automatic discounts when purchasing cylinders through electronic payment methods.

Beneficiaries must register on the official website argentina.gob.ar/subsidios within a maximum period of six months to maintain the benefit. During the registration process, the Energy Secretariat clarified that users will continue to receive the social cylinder subsidy, although the date of the next payment by Anses has not yet been defined.

The new YPF plastic cylinders represent a significant modernization in the consumption of bottled gas in Argentina. Safer, lighter, and more sustainable, they offer an efficient alternative for households and mark a step towards energy innovation. The success of the pilot test will be key to defining their definitive incorporation into the market.
