Árvores centenárias e design urbano em Córdoba: casos onde a natureza desafiou a trama

A recent controversy sparked by the transplant of a white quebracho tree over 280 years old in Villa Allende (Córdoba), removed during the expansion works of Padre Luchesse avenue, once again brought to the forefront the debate on the role of heritage trees in urban design.

The rejection from residents and environmentalists highlighted the tensions between public works and natural conservation.

This episode raised a question as simple as profound: how many times has a route been modified to preserve a tree? A survey by La Voz compiled various cases where native or exotic vegetation managed to integrate —and even condition— urban projects, provincial roads, and architectural developments.

Environmental-focused roadways: examples of routes that respect the landscape

One of the most representative cases is located in Unquillo, on the S-441 provincial route (Amadeo Sabattini avenue). The company Caminos de las Sierras adapted the layout to preserve a century-old carob tree, in the section that connects with the E-53 highway. Completed in 2021, the project demonstrates that tree conservation can be incorporated into road planning without sacrificing functionality.

In other towns in the interior of Córdoba, such as Brinkmann, Porteña, and Freyre, the design of provincial route No. 1 includes central flowerbeds with palm trees and trees that reinforce the local identity.

In many cases, afforestation was added after the layout was built, but in others, pre-existing specimens that defined the visual landscape were respected.

The city and its trees: urban design and avenues that preserve species

In the capital of Córdoba, several examples demonstrate that greenery can actively integrate into urban environments. The Manuel Cardeñosa avenue, in the north area, preserves a row of eucalyptus trees —a non-native species— that determined the final layout of the road corridor and also of the adjacent commercial property, where a dozen specimens were incorporated into the parking lot.

In other cases, it was the architectural design that adjusted to the tree. In Colón avenue at 649, a monkey puzzle tree stands out inside a fashion store called Mundo Moda. The building was designed to maintain the specimen, which grows between two party walls and pierces the roof, creating a unique image.

Another example can be seen at the intersection of Vélez Sársfield and San Juan boulevard, in front of the Patio Olmos shopping center. There, during the urbanization of the square, large tipa trees were preserved, whose shade protects one of the busiest corners of the city.

Urban planning and road reconfiguration: When is a tree preserved?

Although not all trees can be preserved in place during a road work, there are precedents demonstrating that with proper planning it is possible to redesign layouts considering the vegetation.

The difference usually lies in the nature of the project, institutional commitment, and the heritage valuation of the specimens involved.
