Centenary trees and urban design in Córdoba: cases where nature defied the layout

The recent controversy sparked by the transplant of a white quebracho tree over 280 years old in Villa Allende (Córdoba), removed during the works to expand Padre Luchesse Avenue, once again brought to the forefront the debate about the role of heritage trees in urban design.

The rejection by residents and environmentalists highlighted the tensions between public works and natural conservation.

This episode raised a question as simple as it is profound: how many times has a layout been modified to preserve a tree? A survey by the portal La Voz compiled various cases where native or exotic vegetation managed to integrate —and even influence— urban projects, provincial roads, and architectural developments.

Environmental-focused roadways: examples of routes that respect the landscape

One of the most representative cases is located in Unquillo, on provincial route S-441 (Amadeo Sabattini Avenue). The company Caminos de las Sierras adapted the layout to preserve a centennial carob tree, in the stretch that connects to the E-53 highway. Completed in 2021, the project shows that tree conservation can be incorporated into road planning without sacrificing functionality.

In other towns in the interior of Córdoba, such as Brinkmann, Porteña, and Freyre, the design of provincial route No. 1 includes central flower beds with palm trees and trees that strengthen the local identity.

In many cases, afforestation was incorporated after building the layout, but in others, existing specimens were respected that defined the road landscape.

The city and its trees: urban design and avenues that preserve species

In the city of Córdoba, several examples demonstrate that trees can actively integrate into urban environments. Manuel Cardeñosa Avenue, in the northern area, preserves a row of eucalyptus trees —a non-native species— that determined the final layout of the road corridor and also of the adjacent commercial property, where a dozen specimens were incorporated into the parking lot.

In other cases, it was the architectural design that adapted to the tree. On Colón Avenue at 649, a monkey puzzle tree stands out inside a commercial space called Mundo Moda. The building was designed to preserve the specimen, which grows between two party walls and pierces the roof, creating a unique image.

Another example can be seen at the intersection of Vélez Sársfield and San Juan Boulevard, in front of the Patio Olmos shopping center. There, during the urbanization of the square, large tipa trees were preserved, whose shade protects one of the busiest corners of the city.

Urban planning and road reconfiguration: When is a tree preserved?

While not all trees can be preserved in place during a road project, there are precedents that demonstrate that with proper planning it is possible to redesign layouts based on vegetation.

The difference usually lies in the nature of the project, institutional commitment, and the heritage value of the specimens involved.
