For the first time, monitoring of an Andean condor in the Quebrada del Condorito National Park, Córdoba, has been initiated through a satellite tracking device.
This device was placed on a young female named Carlita, recently released in the protected area. It will allow for research and online monitoring of the behavior of this species, observing its movements and trajectories.
Project “Ecology and Conservation of the Andean Condor”
This is the first step of the “Ecology and Conservation of the Andean Condor” project in the Quebrada del Condorito National Park. Led by Dr. Sergio Lambertucci from the National University of Comahue, the project is supported by the protected area and the Central Regional Directorate of Conservation of the National Parks Administration (APN).
Its objective is the satellite tracking of the entire condor population in the protected area.
Tracking Through the Movebank Program
The bird’s tracking will be carried out through the Movebank program, a free online database hosted at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior. This will provide valuable information for the understanding and conservation of the species.
Interinstitutional Collaboration for Conservation
Carlita’s recovery was managed by the Tatú Carreta Reserve, and her release was carried out with the collaboration of the APN, the Ministry of Environment and Circular Economy, and the Environmental Police of Córdoba.
This research and conservation project is also being carried out in other locations, such as the San Guillermo National Park in San Juan, thanks to interinstitutional coordination.
Enhancing Conservation Efforts
This important initiative aims to improve Andean condor conservation efforts in the protected area, ensuring a sustainable future for this emblematic species.
