Causes of the cooling of the North Atlantic

The research, led by Kay McMonigal from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, indicates that changes in ocean circulation will be due to weaker winds.

Scientists are still working to fully understand why relative cooling occurs in the North Atlantic warming hole, but global circulation patterns are considered a key factor.

They would reduce the agitation in the ocean between Newfoundland and Greenland, decreasing the amount of warm groundwater that mixes upwards.

“There are many implications for the climate, especially in Europe,” stated McMonigal. “If we want to predict things accurately, we need to consider the winds,” she added.
