The international organization recognizes as “Person of the Year” the management of the president of Mexico for elevating animal welfare to constitutional status and promoting laws against abuse.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has been distinguished with the title of Person of the Year by the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in its Latin America division. This recognition highlights the leader’s commitment to integrating the protection and animal welfare within the nation’s legislative agenda, setting a precedent in the region by seeking constitutional guarantees for non-human species.
The appointment is based on the decisive actions that Sheinbaum has led since the beginning of her administration and her previous stage. Among the milestones highlighted by the organization is the promotion of a constitutional reform that explicitly prohibits animal abuse in Mexican territory.
“Person of the Year” Initiative
According to PETA Latino, this initiative not only seeks to punish cruelty but redefines the relationship of the State with animals, recognizing them as subjects of legal protection.
In addition to the reforms in the Constitution, the international organization valued the implementation of public health programs linked to animal welfare, such as mass sterilization campaigns and free vaccination campaigns.
These measures are seen as a model of “animal welfare agenda” that addresses the issue from an ethical and preventive perspective, moving away from merely punitive approaches.
The Person of the Year distinction awarded by PETA is a recognition that the organization gives to public figures who use their influence to generate structural changes in favor of animal rights.
In the case of Claudia Sheinbaum, her ability to transform political will into current laws that protect companion and working animals, as well as the promotion of an education based on empathy and respect for all living beings, is highlighted.
With this announcement, Mexico positions itself at the center of the international discussion on nature rights. The current administration has reiterated that animal welfare is an essential component of its social policy, aligning with the demands of a citizenship that demands more compassionate environments free of violence towards species.
