Delta Air Lines and the start-up JetZero have joined forces to develop an innovative aircraft that promises to transform the aviation industry thanks to its fuel efficiency. The project is based on the Blended-Wing-Body (BWB) design, which offers a 50% reduction in fuel consumption compared to traditional models.
This alliance is part of Delta’s commitment to reduce operational costs and move towards sustainability, with the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The airline will play a key role in the development of the aircraft by providing its operational and interior design expertise to ensure an exceptional travel experience for passengers.
The collaboration between Delta and JetZero comes after the start-up received a grant from the U.S. Air Force in 2023 to build a full-scale demonstrator, with its first flight scheduled for 2027. This initiative represents an evolution in fuel efficiency, allowing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and the integration of advanced technologies without the need to completely redesign current propulsion systems.
Amelia DeLuca, Delta’s Sustainability Director, highlighted the importance of this advancement: “As we work to reduce our carbon footprint with current solutions, it is essential to invest in revolutionary technologies like JetZero’s BWB aircraft, which will make a real difference in the future of aviation.”

## Energy Efficiency and Emissions Reduction
The BWB design, supported by research from NASA and Stanford University since the 1990s, has demonstrated its potential to improve energy efficiency and aerodynamics of aircraft. This innovation adds to Delta’s multiple initiatives to reduce environmental impact, such as the incorporation of winglets on its planes and onboard weight reduction, which in 2024 saved over 40 million gallons of fuel.
Tom O’Leary, CEO of JetZero, emphasized that this aircraft model will allow immediate advances in reducing energy costs and emissions. “Delta has been a key partner since 2023 and their support will help us commercialize this innovative technology,” he stated. With this collaboration, Delta and JetZero consolidate their leadership in transitioning to a more sustainable and efficient aviation, laying the groundwork for the future of air travel.
## A Decision Bringing Great Advantages
The merger between these companies will not only save them 50% of fuel but will also help improve their environmental relationships, providing the following benefits:
– **Reduces pollution:** Using less fuel emits fewer gases into the atmosphere.
– **Decreases greenhouse gas emissions:** Fossil fuels emit carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) that contribute to global warming.
– **Improves air quality:** By reducing atmospheric pollution, air quality is improved for people.
– **Contributes to reducing oil dependence:** By consuming less fuel, dependence on foreign oil is reduced.
