Efficient windows: the key role of PVC in home energy savings during winter

When thinking about a sustainable home, windows are more than just an aesthetic resource: they are efficient elements for thermal comfort and energy consumption.

It is proven that air conditioning represents about 50% of household energy expenditure, and that over a third of thermal losses and gains occur through poorly designed openings or inefficient materials.

Therefore, choosing the right materials for windows is crucial. According to Miguel García, executive director of the Argentine Association of PVC (AAPVC), “the type of frame or profile, along with the glass (double or triple glazing), the hardware, and the complete window system directly influence thermal insulation and energy savings”.

PVC: efficiency and durability in service of sustainability

One of the most recommended materials for windows is PVC, for its high thermal performance, long lifespan, and low environmental impact. According to the AAPVC, more than 65% of its applications exceed 50 years of use, and many can reach a century.

The main benefits of PVC include:

  • Energy efficiency: its low thermal conductivity prevents cold leaks in winter and heat leaks in summer. This property helps reduce the need for heating or air conditioning, resulting in lower energy consumption and bills.
  • Sound insulation: in addition to thermal insulation, its structure helps significantly reduce external noise, especially useful in urban areas or near traffic.
  • Durability and resistance: it withstands solar radiation, moisture, wear, and climate changes without losing functionality or aesthetics.
  • Positive environmental impact: PVC is 100% recyclable and its manufacturing process requires less energy than other materials, reducing the building’s carbon footprint.

Efficient windows, sustainable buildings

The use of PVC windows not only improves energy efficiency but also contributes to the set of variables that define a sustainable building: indoor air quality, thermal and acoustic comfort, residents’ health, and architectural flexibility.

“PVC windows contribute to the health, well-being, and efficiency of homes and offices. They are a strategic component for building environmentally friendly homes for their inhabitants,” concludes García.
