Motorcycles and sustainable mobility: an alternative for reducing emissions, congestion, and energy consumption in the city

During the Sustainable Mobility Week, the Chamber of Motorcycle Manufacturers (CAFAM) shared data positioning motorcycles as a robust and sustainable option in the face of current urban and environmental challenges.

Their energy efficiency, low environmental impact, and urban versatility make them key allies in advancing towards greener and connected cities.

Emissions and consumption: concrete advantages over traditional transportation

Electric motorcycles emit only 17 grams of CO₂ per passenger and kilometer.

Motorcycles can emit up to 50% less carbon dioxide (CO₂) per kilometer traveled compared to other vehicles. In the case of electric motorcycles, this figure drops to 17 grams per passenger and kilometer, making them one of the cleanest alternatives available.

“Motorcycles offer a significant advantage in the fight against climate change,” says the Road Safety Commission of CAFAM.

Additionally, their average fuel consumption is around 4.4 liters per 100 km, with efficient models going as low as 3 liters, which reduces the demand for fossil fuels and eases the user’s wallet.

Lifecycle, urban space, and noise: positive impacts in the city

The manufacturing of motorcycles, both electric and combustion, requires less materials and energy, resulting in a lower initial carbon footprint. In urban spaces, motorcycles take up less surface area to move and park, helping to decongest traffic and optimize land use.

Acoustic regulations and modern engine design also help reduce noise pollution, creating more pleasant and healthier environments.

Market boom and technological transformation

Over 360 thousand motorcycles were registered between January and July 2025, with a strong presence of imported brands.

According to CAFAM, between January and July 2025, 360,163 motorcycles were registered, representing a 47.5% growth compared to the same period in 2024.

This increase is accompanied by a market reconfiguration, with a rise in Chinese brands’ presence, which increased their market share from 29% to 46%.

CFMOTO and the electric bet: connected and sustainable scooters

The CFMOTO brand leads growth with a 130% increase in sales, driven by innovative models like the 450. Now, it expands its offering with the electric scooters AE6+ and AE8 S+, part of the ZEEHO line:
