The Santa Cruz Government confirmed a novelty directly related to Los Glaciares National Park. El Chaltén expands, in terms of expanding the urban area.
This will be done through the incorporation of 190 hectares from El Cangío ranch, thanks to an agreement reached between the government and the owner.
This will allow the province to transfer a section of the ranch for the expansion of the urban area, facilitating the development of new housing and services in the town.

Mayor Néstor Ticó, who worked with Governor Claudio Vidal in managing this expansion, expressed satisfaction with the agreement. “We started exploring this option because it is the alternative we have outside the National Park,” he said.

“This implies that decisions will be made between Santa Cruz and the private owner, without the need to go through Congress, speeding up processes and avoiding delays,” he added.
From the Municipality, it was highlighted that it would involve almost 190 hectares in total, with the first two stages covering about 17 hectares and that already have topographic surveys.
The incorporation of these hectares seeks to address the high demand for land in the town, whose urban area collapsed over a decade ago, limiting the establishment of family homes. “We chose this path to provide quick responses to the community, as the agreement between the province and the private sector significantly reduces the timelines to start urbanization,” Ticó stated.
The agreement between the Santa Cruz Government and the private sector also has a direct impact on the community, as it will allow urban spaces to expand without affecting the ecosystem of Los Glaciares National Park, one of the country’s main natural reserves.
It is worth mentioning that, in June, during his first official visit to El Chaltén, Governor Claudio Vidal stated that the steps to expand the urban area would be defined before the end of the year.
Finally, the mayor emphasized the joint work between authorities. “We are working with the Governor in the context of the housing emergency in El Chaltén. When the community, the Provincial Government, and the municipality join efforts, progress is possible,” he stressed. “This government decided to give a concrete response to the housing issue in our town,” he concluded.
