The Laguna del Diamante Natural Reserve began its 2026 season this Thursday, January 8. Thus, the formal opening took place at the Alvarado Park Ranger Section, with free admission.
This beginning marks the return of visitors to one of the most fragile ecosystems in Mendoza. Therefore, the authorities reinforce the conservation focus and responsible use. In this way, the aim is to balance tourist enjoyment and environmental protection.
The lagoon is located at 3,300 meters above sea level. And it is situated at the foot of the Maipo volcano, in the middle of the main mountain range. This extreme environment defines both its beauty and its vulnerability.

A protected area of high ecological value
Located in the department of San Carlos, the reserve preserves unique mountain landscapes. It also harbors high-altitude environments sensitive to human impact. Therefore, access is regulated through quotas and shifts.
During the season, low-impact recreational activities are enabled. These include hiking, sport fishing, and cycling. Picnics, camping, and mountaineering are also allowed in specific areas.
In all cases, entry requires mandatory prior reservation. This system allows for organizing the flow of people. And at the same time, it protects the area’s natural balance.
Entry modalities and permitted activities
Day entry enables basic recreational activities. However, the park rangers’ indications must always be respected. This minimizes risks for visitors and the environment.
The camping option allows for several nights’ stay. The authorized area is rugged and lacks provisions. Therefore, each visitor must bring everything necessary.
For the ascent or trekking to the Maipo volcano, there is a special modality. This authorizes extended stays and requires mandatory equipment. In this way, safety is reinforced in a high mountain environment.
Organization and care for a conscious visit
The reservation system is managed digitally. There, activity, date, time, and number of people are chosen. Then, payment is made through authorized electronic means.
The receipt must be presented upon entering the reserve. Without this step, access is not authorized. Thus, effective control of the protected area is guaranteed.
Recommendations include hydration, warm clothing, and sun protection. Additionally, the use of high and well-equipped vehicles is advised. Everything aims to reduce risks in an isolated environment.

How to get to Laguna del Diamante
The reserve is located about 220 kilometers from the city of Mendoza. The trip takes approximately four hours by vehicle. Therefore, it is recommended to plan in advance.
From the provincial capital, you must take National Route 40. Then, continue south to the signposted access. The last stretch is gravel and crosses mountain areas.
Due to road conditions, it is suggested to drive with caution. It is also important to check the road conditions before leaving. Thus, access is made in a safe and responsible manner.
Nature, conservation, and mountain experience
The 2026 season once again highlights this protected space. At the same time, it reinforces the idea of sustainable tourism. Each visit implies a shared environmental responsibility.
Enjoying the Laguna del Diamante also means taking care of it. Respecting rules, times, and limits is part of the experience. In this way, this Andean landscape can be preserved for the future.
