30% reduction in plastic use at Argentina’s airports

Within the framework of the Zero Plastic Destination project, Aeropuertos Argentina, together with Unplastify, has managed to reduce the use of single-use plastics in its terminals by 28% since March 2023.

This represents more than 25 tons of plastic avoided per year, surpassing the goal set for 2024 of 20%.

Details of the Zero Plastic Destination Project

This initiative, started in October 2022, aims to reduce the environmental impact and plastic footprint by eliminating single-use plastics in the terminals.

Aeropuertos Argentina initially measured the plastic footprint of gastronomic establishments and shops, inviting different actors from the airport community to join the project. Work meetings, training sessions, awareness campaigns, and new strategies were carried out.

The project involved more than 70 participants in training meetings and 4 workshops, designing and implementing over 80 strategies to reduce plastic use.

Results and Commitment

The commitment of 74 businesses, 55 brands, and 13 airports (Aeroparque, Bariloche, Comodoro Rivadavia, Córdoba, Ezeiza, Iguazú, Mar del Plata, Mendoza, Neuquén, Puerto Madryn, Posadas, Salta, and Tucumán) has been crucial. Companies reduced their plastic use between 7% and 94%, with 46% of the reduction related to food packaging and containers, and 34% to cups.

During the presentation of the Plastic Footprint, special recognition was given to Puerto Madryn Airport with a 94% reduction and Córdoba Airport with 63%. Several brands were also acknowledged for their effort and innovation.
