US transforms radioactive waste into glass through vitrification at Hanford to improve safe storage

United States has initiated a significant advancement in the management of radioactive waste inherited from the 20th century, through an innovative process that transforms this waste into glass. This milestone is taking place at the Hanford complex, located in the state of Washington, considered one of the most contaminated places in the country.

Transformation of radioactive waste into glass

The method used, known as vitrification, involves mixing radioactive waste with glass-forming materials. This compound is heated in industrial furnaces to over 1,100 degrees Celsius, chemically integrating the material into a solid matrix. Although this procedure does not neutralize radioactivity, it does immobilize the waste, reducing its mobility and facilitating its safe storage.

The plant dedicated to this task is the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, which focuses on handling the waste from 177 underground tanks containing approximately 212 million liters of chemical and radioactive waste. At least 63 of these tanks have leaks, with one million gallons already escaped.

This vitrification process is essentially a change in the nature of the problem: from a mass of waste prone to leaks, a stable glass is obtained, easier to control and store.

The U.S. Department of Energy has highlighted that this initiative meets legal commitments with the state of Washington, setting a milestone for October 15, 2025. This advancement has not only technical implications but also budgetary ones, with a record allocation of more than 3.2 billion dollars for the fiscal year 2026.

Despite the advances, the challenge of cleaning up Hanford is intergenerational and highly complex. The roadmap reviewed by the Department of Energy and other federal agencies plans to extend until 2040 and beyond, prioritizing safety in the treatment and disposal of waste.

In conclusion, although vitrification does not eliminate radioactivity, it offers a safer solution for managing this waste. The process constitutes an important step towards reducing long-term environmental risks.
