Under the motto: “Beat Plastic Pollution”, World Environment Day is a globally relevant initiative led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) .
Its origins date back to 1972, the year in which the United Nations General Assembly first established it.
Each edition of this significant day is sponsored by a different country. In this 2025 , the honor of hosting and organizing falls on the Republic of Korea .
The choice of the central theme for this edition is crucial: its motto will be “Beat plastic pollution” . Through this powerful slogan, the promotion of specific actions aimed at preventing the alarming and growing appearance of these hazardous waste in the natural environment will be intensified.
Furthermore, there will be a special emphasis on raising awareness among the global population about the serious consequences that plastic pollution is generating, both for the immense biodiversity of the planet and for human health.
The magnitude of the challenge is undeniable and urgent. Annually, global plastic production exceeds 400 million tons .
Most concerning is that it is estimated that half of this massive volume of material is designed for an extremely short lifespan, that is, for single-use purposes .
Despite the urgent need to reduce, reuse, and recycle, the reality is bleak: only about 10% of all plastic produced globally manages to be recycled.
“Beat Plastic Pollution”, the devastating impact on the planet
Every year, an astonishing amount of 11 million tons of plastic waste finds its way into our lakes, rivers, and oceans. To put it into perspective, this volume is equivalent to the weight of approximately 1,089 Eiffel Towers stacked up.
Plastic pollution is not only a threat to our ecosystems, but it also directly affects us. It is estimated that humans ingest over 50,000 plastic particles each year , a number that significantly increases when considering the particles we inhale.
Single-use plastic products, once discarded or burned, not only harm human health and biodiversity, but also pollute all kinds of ecosystems, from the highest mountain peaks to the deepest seabeds.
The consequences for wildlife are tragic. Over 100,000 marine animals die from plastics each year .
It is common to see sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, their natural prey, and sea birds found with their stomachs sadly full of plastic items.
Furthermore, these harmful wastes compromise the health of our riverbanks and the vitality of coral reefs.
A broad global environmental movement
Over the past 50 years, the celebration of World Environment Day has evolved into one of the world’s most far-reaching and influential platforms in support of environmental causes.
Tens of millions of people have actively joined in, participating virtually and in-person in countless activities, events, and all kinds of initiatives taking place around the world.
Time is running out and nature is in an emergency situation. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
If we don’t act now, exposure to polluted air will increase by 50% this decade, while plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems could triple by 2040. But these won’t be the only consequences. Many more will follow.
We need a sustainable life in harmony with nature
This day invites citizens, institutions, and educational communities to reflect and act collectively to protect the planet, promoting activities such as reforestation, cleaning natural environments, and environmental education aimed at fostering more sustainable lifestyles.
It has become a great celebration for the Earth, a day for children, youth, and adults to remember how important it is to care for the planet. It is a day to listen to what nature is trying to tell us and to think together about how to help on that day and throughout the rest of the year.
World Environment Day 2025
World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th each year. This date was not chosen randomly, but commemorates a key historical event that marked the beginning of the global fight for the protection of the natural environment.
Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment
On that day, the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment was held, organized by the United Nations. It was the first time that representatives from different countries gathered to discuss, on a serious and global scale, the problems caused by human activity on the planet</
