Obsolete technology, environment on alert?: Mendoza will give a new opportunity to electronic waste

In the context of a month marked by environmental commitment, the Plaza España in Mendoza was the scene of an intense day of electronic waste collection. As part of the Environment Month, more than 400 kilos of unused devices were handed in by concerned neighbors worried about the fate of their electrical appliances.

Computers, keyboards, printers, monitors, and other electronic items ceased to be potential trash and became recoverable resources. This action, driven by the Secretariat of Environment and Urban Development, aims to mitigate one of the most polluting and increasing wastes of the digital era: WEEE.

Electronic waste contains heavy metals and toxic substances that, if mismanaged, can seep into the soil or water, causing a severe environmental impact. Faced with this, the differentiated collection and proper treatment become key tools to protect the environment’s health.

## Second life for electronic waste

The Secretariat of Environment and Urban Development allocated all collected materials to Reciclarg, a company specialized in technology recycling. There, the separation of reusable components, proper handling of hazardous waste, and final disposal in secure sites are carried out. This way, it prevents elements like lead or mercury from ending up in common landfills.

At the same time, recycling these devices reduces the need for extracting new resources, representing a double gain for the environment. The recovered metals and plastics can return to the production cycle, reducing the ecological footprint and energy consumption.

During the event, advice on other environmental management programs was also offered, promoting sustainable habits. The municipality reminds that there are fixed spaces like the Punto Limpio of the Nave Cultural, where neighbors can deliver these waste throughout the year.

## Environmental culture and active citizenship

The campaign reinforces the idea that each person can make a difference. Correctly separating waste, learning about waste disposal, and approaching collection points are small gestures that, when combined, generate a significant change.

Digitalization is advancing rapidly, and with it, the volume of electronic waste. Faced with this challenge, initiatives like the one in the City of Mendoza seek to transform the problem into an opportunity: reducing environmental damage, reusing materials, and building collective ecological awareness.

In times where caring for the planet cannot wait, this event showed that a concrete action, like delivering an old CPU, can be the first step towards a more responsible and circular consumption model.

## Electronic waste and its environmental consequences

Electronic waste, known as WEEE, poses a growing threat to the environment and human health. Many of these devices contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic, which can seep into the soil and water if not managed properly, contaminating entire ecosystems.

In addition to the environmental impact, improper disposal of this waste exposes informal workers and communities near landfills to toxic substances that can cause respiratory, neurological, and cancerous diseases. Burning or disassembling without protection worsens this risk, releasing polluting gases into the atmosphere.

On a global scale, the increasing volume of WEEE contributes to the depletion of natural resources, as many of its components could be recovered and reused. Proper collection and recycling allow closing the life cycle of these materials, reducing pressure on ecosystems, and promoting a more circular and sustainable economy.
