Waste-to-Energy: The Alto Valle is betting on environmental change in Río Negro.

The **Government of Río Negro** is promoting an innovative proposal to reuse residues from the **[timber industry](https://noticiasambientales.com/residuos/captura-de-carbono-bajo-tierra-proponen-enterrar-residuos-de-madera-para-mitigar-el-cambio-climatico/)** as a source of **clean energy**. Through a technical study funded by the **Federal Investment Council** (CFI), the installation of a pilot plant for **solid biofuels** in the city of Allen is being projected.

The main objective is to transform **residues** such as poplar sawdust and almond shells into pellets or briquettes. These materials, usually discarded, can be used as **fuel** in stoves, boilers, and other thermal applications.

The plant not only aims to produce **renewable energy**, but also to operate as a technical training center. It will train local operators in the efficient handling of these residues, reducing their **environmental impact** and boosting the regional economy.

The initial project contemplates a processing capacity of 300 kilograms per hour, to be installed at the CAFEMA site, and was developed by the **National Institute of Industrial Technology** (INTI).

## A strategy that integrates environment, production, and employment

The energy use of **wood residues** responds to a specific need: to avoid the accumulation of wastes that currently **pollute** or are underutilized. With this demonstrative plant, the first step is taken towards a more **responsible and sustainable management** of industrial leftovers.

Additionally, the technical study recognizes a much greater potential: the Alto Valle region generates around 8,200 tons of available **biomass** annually. This figure multiplies the initial plant’s capacity and opens the door to a decentralized network of pelletizing centers.

Replicating this experience in other locations would not only reduce transportation costs but also **strengthen local development** through genuine employment and clean technologies applied on a regional scale.

In the medium term, a second stage is foreseen to evaluate the economic and technical viability of expanding this network, consolidating a chain of **environmentally sustainable value**.

## Possible uses of wood residues

The residues generated by **forestry activity** can become valuable resources if processed correctly. Sawdust, shavings, bark, and shells can be transformed into pellets or briquettes, useful for home heating, industrial heating, and even **electricity generation**.

These **solid biofuels** have low moisture content, **high energy density**, and significantly lower emissions than fossil fuels. Furthermore, their production is more cost-effective when done close to the origin of the **residue**.

Another potential use is composting, applicable to more humid or mixed **plant residues**, which can be turned into fertilizer for agriculture or **afforestation**. This diversification helps reduce pressure on landfills and close the biomass cycle.

## A province focused on sustainability

This project reflects a growing trend: leveraging residues to create **environmental, social, and economic value**. Río Negro seeks to position itself as a leader in decentralized **renewable energies** and cleaner production policies.

The initiative marks a starting point for new partnerships between government, industry, and science, betting on a **development model** that looks to the future while addressing today’s local needs.
