In order to restore the **[Misiones Jungle](https://noticiasambientales.com/medio-ambiente/selva-misionera-el-bosque-que-alberga-mas-de-la-mitad-de-la-biodiversidad-de-argentina/)**, more than **36,000 native trees** will be planted by 2025. This is part of the initiative carried out by **Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina**.

It will take place in the municipality of **San Pedro, Misiones**. This will surpass the 380 restored hectares in the locality, strengthening the **ecological connectivity** and ecosystem services of the region.

## Restoring the Misiones Jungle Task
“This task will be made possible thanks to the commitment of **38 small producer families**, who will restore 152 hectares through different modalities.

The project “Restoring the Misiones Jungle for people and nature” is led by Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina and is implemented jointly with **San Pedro Municipality and INTA**. Since its inception in 2022, it has involved more than 80 families.

“The active participation of rural families is essential for the success of the project, as **restoration takes place on their farms** through a process of surveying, technical support, and ongoing exchange,” highlighted **Jonatan Villalba**, forest restoration and management analyst at Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina.

“Each tree planted by families not only helps to recover the forest but also represents **water, shade, and a resilient future** in the face of climate change,” he added.

Under an approach of “**inclusive conservation**,” the initiative combines ecological restoration with local productive development.

## Training and Assistance
In addition to reforestation, the project provides **training and assistance** in sustainable productive activities, as well as support for access to safe water according to each family’s needs.

Since 2008, Fundación Vida Silvestre has been working on forest restoration in the province of Misiones.

In **Comandante Andresito**, over 120 rural families contributed to the recovery of more than 400 hectares. Currently, efforts are focused on San Pedro, with the goal of **exceeding 380 hectares** under restoration process this year.

“The knowledge of the local population, combined with the experience of the **technical project team**, is key to safeguarding essential environmental services, **such as water**,” emphasized Villalba.

“The participating families are not only restoring; they are betting on and promoting a better future for their children and for the nature that surrounds them,” he added.

The restoration actions include three modalities:
– **Plantation on massif**, which consists of reforesting degraded areas with little or no vegetation.
– **Forest enrichment**, which reinforces the natural regeneration of existing forest areas.
– **Agroforestry systems**, which integrate productive crops, such as yerba mate, with native tree species to improve biodiversity and the economic sustainability of participating families.

## The Misiones Jungle, with over half of Argentina’s biodiversity

The Misiones Jungle is part of the Atlantic Forest ecoregion, which extends through Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay.

It is one of the **most biodiverse ecosystems** in the world and plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change, regulating water, and supporting local communities.

With more than **400 bird species**, the country’s three largest and most voluminous rivers (after the Río de la Plata), mountains reaching **800 meters high**, and half a million hectares of parks and reserves, Misiones is the green lung of Argentina.

However, **over 80% of its original surface has been lost** due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation. Forest degradation not only impacts biodiversity but also the people who depend on it for their well-being and development.
