Alleged mistreatment reported at a private zoo in Chile, demanding state inspection of animal welfare

Videos and comments on **social media** have raised alarm about the condition of the animals at the Concepción zoo in Nonguén (Chile) and alleged mistreatment.

The **Perrita Oveja Foundation**, represented by **Tannia Sepúlveda**, expressed concern about the critical condition of the **brown bear**.

Given this situation, members of the organization, accompanied by **Deputy Félix González**, went to the **Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG)** requesting an **urgent inspection** at the Concepción zoo.

Official Complaint and Call for Intervention

On **Tuesday, May 27th**, **Deputy González** submitted a **letter to the SAG** detailing:

“As environmentalists and nature defenders, we cannot allow the animals’ rights to be disrespected,” stated González.

So far, the **Nonguén zoo has not issued any official response** to these complaints.

Towards a New Legal Framework Against Mistreatment and for Animal Protection

The deputy is **considering presenting a bill** to prohibit the existence of **zoos**, arguing that these institutions **do not ensure the welfare of animals in captivity**.

Meanwhile, **the Perrita Oveja Foundation** demands an immediate inspection by the **SAG** to verify the health status of the animals and ensure adequate conditions.

Reactions and Expectations for Inspection

This case has sparked **widespread debate**, prompting calls for **greater regulations on animal captivity spaces** in **Chile**.

Authorities are expected to act swiftly to determine the **real situation of the zoo**, ensuring that the **animals receive the necessary care**.

The Zoo’s Response to the Allegations

In a conversation with Radio ADN, Andreas Haufe, a veterinarian at the zoo located in the Nonguén area, stated that it is not possible to generalize based on the 5% who think differently.

“The truth is that we **rely on statistics**. First of all, we have around 95%, so to speak, of compliments for how everything is, and 5% of people who are not in favor,” he said.

The veterinarian also invited Deputy González —who promoted an inspection letter to the SAG and **suggested the closure of zoos**— to visit the facility. “It’s easy to have an opinion without knowing. We invite him to see firsthand what we do,” he said.
