San Marcos Sierras: nature, history, and sustainable living in the heart of Córdoba

With its dirt streets, fruits and vegetables without agrochemicals, organic honey, and crystalline rivers, San Marcos Sierras is much more than a tourist destination: it is a way of life centered on respect for nature.

Its history dates back to pre-Hispanic times and is deeply linked to the Comechingona and Sanavirona culture. In an unprecedented event for the time, indigenous communities obtained land grants from Governor Marqués de Sobremonte in 1806, under the leadership of chief Francisco Tulián. This ancestral root remains alive in the soul of the town, now home to indigenous people, naturalists, artists, and families who practice a sustainable way of life.

Free Fair and Agrochemical-Free Ordinance

In addition to its traditional Craft Fair, on weekends the Community Free Fair takes place, where organic, agrochemical-free, and fair trade products are sold.

San Marcos Sierras has an ordinance that prohibits the use of agricultural chemicals, consolidating its profile as a pioneering ecological community.

Five Unmissable Activities to Connect with Local Nature

1. Guided Visit to El Árbol Thematic Park

An apicultural space that combines botany, history, and culture. They produce and sell wild honey, royal jelly, native pollen, propolis, wax, and even craft beer. Guided tours allow visitors to learn about the life of bees and their crucial role in environmental balance.

2. Tour of the Vegetal Tunnels

On foot, by bike, or on horseback, you can explore these paths covered with wild vegetation. Names like Callejón de los Duendes or Callejón de las Tres Eras frame a path with native species such as carob trees, quebrachos, eucalyptus, and jarillas. Free access all year round.

3. Exploration of the San Marcos River Gorge

An ideal environment for picnicking, hiking, or contemplation. Stand out aboriginal mortars with astronomical function, used by the Comechingones to observe stars through their reflection in the water.

4. Hike to the Quilpo River

Considered one of the purest rivers in Córdoba, with no settlements on its banks. During the summer, spaces like Tres Piletas (with waterfall and beaches) and Vado de López stand out. In winter, it is ideal for barbecues and walks.

5. Hippie Museum: Unique in the World

Located 15 blocks from downtown, on Callejón Los Duendes, this curious museum houses unique pieces from the ’60s movement: a guitar from Tanguito, a vinyl signed by The Beatles, and a gift from Yoko Ono. Its mushroom-shaped structure makes it even more special.
