China has surpassed 1,000 gigawatts of installed solar capacity, becoming the first country in the world to achieve this milestone in the solar revolution. Only in the first five months of 2025, 198 GW of new capacity were added, of which 93 GW were added in May. This expansion is equivalent to installing almost 100 solar panels per second.
In addition to the solar advancement, wind energy also showed significant growth, with 46 GW added since January, further strengthening the country’s renewable profile. This boost is a result of a combination of strategic policies, regulatory urgencies, and a highly competitive local industry.
The new record reinforces China’s leadership in the global energy transition and demonstrates that clean energies can be scaled at unprecedented rates. This technical and logistical feat was driven, in part, by the need to anticipate regulatory changes expected for June.

## Clean Energy on a Planetary Scale
The renewable generation volume that China added in May alone is equivalent to the annual energy demand of countries like Norway, Sweden, or the United Arab Emirates. This monthly burst of renewable expansion makes a tangible difference in the fight against climate change.
Each installed solar or wind gigawatt significantly reduces CO₂ emissions by displacing generation based on fossil fuels. Additionally, these developments allow the electrification of rural areas without harming ecosystems, generating social welfare without compromising the environment.
Beyond the environmental impact, this transformation promotes technological innovation, strengthens the green economy, and provides energy stability in the face of fossil market volatility. China is proving that accelerating the transition is possible with political will, investment, and vision.

## China, as a Leader in the Solar Revolution
In recent years, China has consolidated its global leadership in solar energy with unprecedented expansion. In just the first five months of 2025, the country installed 198 gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity, surpassing a cumulative total exceeding one terawatt (1,000 GW). This figure marks a historic milestone in the global transition to clean energy.
This growth not only strengthens the country’s energy security but also drastically reduces greenhouse gas emissions. With each new installed solar gigawatt, China takes another step towards a more sustainable, resilient energy system aligned with global environmental commitments.
