In a revolutionary breakthrough for sustainable aviation, NASA and GE Aerospace have unveiled the successful flight of an innovative hybrid-electric propulsion system. This demonstration, presented at the Farnborough International Air Show in the United Kingdom, used a Saab 340B aircraft equipped with a megawatt-class electric motor, according to the U.S. space agency.
The remarkable technological development reached altitudes above 30,000 feet in previous tests, setting a precedent for civil aviation. It is the first time an aircraft with hybrid-electric technology operates at that height.
Innovation in Hybrid-Electric Flight: NASA and GE Aerospace at the Forefront
This innovative system combines electric motors, a gas turbine, and energy storage, designed to optimize fuel consumption and operational costs of regional aircraft. According to NASA data, the goal is to accelerate the adoption of advanced commercial energy systems without compromising aircraft performance or safety.
“This achievement exemplifies NASA’s focus on bold exploration and validation through rigorous research,” commented Laurie Grindle, director of NASA’s Aeronautics Division. The success is due to more than 15 years of research under programs like Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration.
The joint work with GE Aerospace addressed technical challenges such as thermal management and the efficiency of energy batteries. In 2022, system evaluations at NASA’s Electric Aircraft Testbed in Ohio simulated flight conditions at 45,000 feet.
The final phase of the project incorporated power converters, advanced propellers, and a GE Aerospace engine, allowing the transition from ground tests to actual flights. Collaborations with BETA Technologies and Boeing were fundamental in this process.
