Artificial intelligence deciphers 2,000-year-old papyrus buried by Vesuvius using advanced tomography

Modern science has achieved an unprecedented breakthrough in reading an ancient papyrus that was buried for nearly 2,000 years after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This achievement was made possible thanks to artificial intelligence and has opened a window to knowledge that was believed to be lost forever.

The Challenge of Artificial Intelligence in Herculaneum

In the historic city of Herculaneum, several carbonized papyri were found in the 18th century. These documents, belonging to the Villa of the Papyri, have remained unchanged since the volcanic eruption of 79 A.D., and have posed a challenge for archaeologists for centuries.

Previous attempts to unroll these fragile charcoal cylinders resulted in irreparable damage. However, modern technology has changed the game. An international team of researchers has used an innovative approach that combines high-resolution computed tomography with digital reconstruction techniques.

This process begins with a detailed scan of the papyrus using microtomography, a technique that allows for three-dimensional images of the interior without altering the original material. Then, a sophisticated “virtual unrolling” method allows each layer of the manuscript to be reconstructed, revealing its content without physical risk.

Nevertheless, the real challenge was deciphering the writing on the carbonized papyrus. Artificial intelligence was trained to detect microscopic variations on the surface of the roll, identifying the nearly invisible ink marks due to their composition similar to parchment.

This process has managed to recover more than one and a half meters of text, distributed in twenty columns, from a Stoic philosophical treatise. Specialists believe this document addresses essential topics such as ethics and human behavior, while also offering new perspectives on the philosopher Philodemus of Gadara.

Technology has even allowed the identification of an eighth book of his work On the Gods, a discovery that significantly expands the knowledge of his literary legacy.

The effort is part of the Vesuvius Challenge, a global project launched in 2023 that seeks to unravel the content of hundreds of never-before-opened scrolls. This work has driven the development of advanced algorithms and digital reconstruction techniques, which have already demonstrated that it is possible to explore these documents without damaging them.

Researcher Brent Seales highlights the relevance of these achievements, stating that these texts have gone from being preserved relics to becoming active sources of knowledge.

With more than 600 scrolls yet to be studied, the scientific community hopes to discover lost works of Antiquity, providing a greater understanding of Greco-Roman history, philosophy, and literature.
