In the framework of the Environment Month, the City of Mendoza carried out on June 27th a campaign of collection of electronic waste (e-waste) in Plaza España, located between the streets San Lorenzo, Montevideo, 9 de Julio, and Avenida España.
The action aims to reduce the volume of waste sent to final disposal, recover reusable materials, and promote more sustainable and equitable communities.
The activity is part of a waste management model that combines an environmental approach and social commitment, with policies that go beyond the classic concept of urban cleaning. The municipality highlights that the strategy aims to consolidate a circular economy with criteria of circularity, traceability, and valorization.
## An ecosystem of programs to transform waste management
### Separate household collection
By 2025, it will be five years since the launch of the separate household collection program, which facilitates the separation at the source of dry waste—paper, cardboard, plastics, cans, and PET bottles—and promotes recycling as the axis of sustainable local development.
The collection is carried out differently depending on the area:
**West Zone (from Boulogne Sur Mer):**
– Wet and residues: Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
– Wet and green: Tuesdays
– Recyclable dry waste: Fridays
– No collection: Wednesdays and Sundays
**East Zone (from Boulogne Sur Mer eastward):**
– Wet and residues: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays
– Garden green waste: Mondays
– Recyclable dry waste: Thursdays
– No collection: Tuesdays and Saturdays (*Time: the collection truck passes from 9 p.m.*)
### Green Points and Ruleros Network
These spaces allow neighbors, institutions, and businesses to deposit recyclable materials such as cardboard, paper, plastics, and cans. Many devices are being relocated to schools and institutional spaces to preserve their integrity and strengthen their proper use.
### Batteries and Batteries Program
With specific containers for hazardous waste, the City manages the safe collection of batteries and batteries, avoiding environmental and health risks due to their high level of toxicity.
### End-of-Life Tires (NFU) Program
In partnership with Holcim and local tire shops, this program allows for responsible disposal of used tires, transforming them into inputs for energy recovery and preventing their accumulation in public spaces.
### Sustainable Large Generators
Companies, institutions, and businesses with a large volume of waste can join this program through technical inspections, traceability, and exclusive collection circuits. As an incentive, they receive the Municipal Environmental Certification.
## Mendoza: a city moving towards circularity
With multiple operational devices and a comprehensive approach, Mendoza positions itself as a reference in public policies for sustainable waste management, combining citizen participation with technical solutions and public-private articulation.
