Justice and animal protection agencies are investigating a possible clandestine network of greyhound races in rural areas of Balcarce, Buenos Aires province.
The case arose from an anonymous complaint that alerted about illegal activities related to animal abuse in rural areas of the district.
As reported by the local newspaper Diario La Vanguardia, the complaint was received by the Subsecretariat of Citizen Protection of the municipality, which immediately involved the Decentralized Prosecutor’s Office of Balcarce.
The incident was also reported to the security forces to determine if dog races were actually taking place. This practice has been prohibited by law in Argentina since 2016.
Suspicions of clandestine greyhound races in Balcarce: what is known
Greyhound races are prohibited in the country.
The first indications point to a property located near kilometer 71.7 of National Route 226, where unauthorized races may have taken place.
Although responsible parties have not been identified yet, authorities continue with the investigation to clarify the facts and establish if violations to National Law No. 27,330 have been committed.
The regulation prohibits dog races throughout the country, regardless of their breed.
From the Subsecretariat of Citizen Protection, they indicated that “the complaint was taken with absolute seriousness and all corresponding measures are being taken.”
The case is now in the hands of prosecutor Laura Molina, who will determine the next steps.
The fight against animal abuse continues
The case once again brings to the forefront the debate on clandestine practices that violate animal rights.
Greyhound races sparked all kinds of criticisms leading to the enactment of the law due to abuse, abandonment, and exploitation of animals. Animal defense organizations have been denouncing their persistence for years, despite the legal prohibition.
Meanwhile, animal protection associations celebrated the investigation into this possible violation and urged authorities to intensify controls in rural areas, where there is usually less oversight.
The call for awareness and vigilance
This incident highlights the importance of citizen vigilance and active reporting in cases of animal cruelty.
Dog races were banned in 2016.
Furthermore, it underscores the need to continue strengthening public policies for the protection of domestic and wild fauna, especially in contexts where illegal activities can thrive with greater impunity.
From noticiasambientales.com, we closely follow these types of investigations, which not only involve a crime against animals but also an environmental, ethical, and social issue that requires urgent attention.
