World Oceans Day: the future is written in the Patagonian Sea, a key ecosystem for the global climate

Every June 8th, World Oceans Day is celebrated, and in the Southern Cone, the focus is on the Patagonian Sea. This ecosystem silently absorbs heat and carbon, regulating the global climate at an increasing cost to itself. Its waters are warming, ocean fronts are changing, and numerous species are shifting their distribution areas southward.

The question is no longer if change will come, but how prepared ecosystems will be to adapt. Healthy environments have greater resilience, so strengthening the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) connected between Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil is currently the most concrete strategy against climate change.

Recent Advances in Conservation

In March 2026, Brazil created the Albardão National Park, the largest marine park in the southernmost part of the country. This site had been identified as a priority since 2000 and highlighted by the Forum as one of the “Beacons of the Patagonian Sea.” After decades of science and regional cooperation, the presidential decree opened a new chapter of protection.

Albardão is not the destination of 20 years of work. It is the starting point for what follows,” stated Carolina Contato from NEMA, Brazil.

Unprecedented Climate Pressure

The cold waters of the Southwestern Atlantic absorb more CO₂ than any tropical sea, but this regulatory function weakens with warming and acidification. According to Santiago Krapovickas from the Resilient Patagonian Sea Program, properly conserving and managing the MPAs strengthens adaptation capacity and benefits the well-being of coastal communities.

Regional Connection of Ecosystems

The Patagonian Sea connects the ecosystems of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil through ocean currents and migratory routes that sustain the lives of whales, sharks, seabirds, turtles, and penguins. Many species travel thousands of kilometers crossing multiple jurisdictions, making isolated responses from each country insufficient.

Well-managed and connected MPAs function as climate refuges, allowing ecosystems to recover and continue providing essential services: from artisanal fishing to local climate regulation.

“The ocean functions as a single living system. Its protection must be thought of in an integrated manner,” affirmed Andrea Michelson, regional coordinator of the Forum.

World Oceans Day invites us to reflect on the conservation of the Patagonian Sea and its unique biodiversity.

Socioeconomic Impact

The degradation of the Patagonian Sea already affects artisanal fishing communities:

  • Changes in the species caught.
  • Alteration of traditional fishing seasons.
  • Loss of historical fishing grounds.

The biodiversity of the south is the foundation of local economies, cultural traditions, and food systems that have no substitute.

Regional Strategy

The Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea, which brings together 30 organizations since 2004, promotes a shared vision: to build an ecologically connected network of MPAs and conservation corridors. The Resilient Patagonian Sea Program aims to advance towards a “climate-smart” sea, capable of incorporating climate projections into management and strengthening refuges against multidimensional impacts.

Protecting the ocean is no longer just an environmental cause. It is a climatic, social, and economic decision,” summarized Daniela Castro, coordinator of the Chilean node of the Forum.

On this World Oceans Day, the message is clear: the climate future is also at stake in the south, in the Patagonian Sea. Conserving it means ensuring biodiversity, local economies, and resilience against global change. It’s time to take care of it, it’s time to take care of ourselves.
