A food factory in Córdoba was shut down for dumping industrial liquids into the street.

A pungent smell and murky liquid strongly caught the attention of the neighbors in the area of Camino Santa Bárbara. After investigating, the authorities closed a food factory in Córdoba because it was releasing industrial liquids onto the street.

During an inspection, it was confirmed that the discharge came from the plant located at 4005 Galileo Street, and the internal system was discharging effluents directly onto the public road.

The liquid, foul-smelling and accumulated on site, prompted the preventive closure of the establishment by the Institute of Environmental Protection (IPA), as reported by the Municipality of Córdoba this Saturday.

The severe violation of the food factory in Córdoba

Authorities pointed out that the incident constitutes a violation of municipal regulations that prohibit the disposal of industrial waste with potential pollutants. The closure aims to prevent health and environmental risks, as well as halt new discharges while legal actions are carried out.

Therefore, the establishment will not be able to resume its activities until presenting and implementing an environmental remediation plan and complying with all technical requirements demanded by the municipality.

Municipal inspectors warned that, due to the magnitude of the discharge, the owner will have to face economic sanctions and take responsibility for cleaning up the affected channel.

The measure is part of a strengthening of environmental controls aimed at preventing similar incidents in other areas of the city.

Another contamination episode: what caused the nauseating odor in Córdoba

This case adds to a recent episode in the same city. The Secretariat of Environment of Córdoba identified the cause of a persistent nauseating odor reported by neighbors in the neighborhoods Alta Córdoba and Cofico a few days ago.

According to the Director of Environmental Impact Assessment, Eduardo Sarríes, as reported to local media, the source was a dump located on private land. Substances with a high sulfur content were found there. What are the consequences.

The odor characterization report released by the authorities identified the presence of Dimethyl Disulfide and Dimethyl Trisulfide. These are sulfur compounds with strong odoriferous activity, capable of generating intense odors even at low concentrations.

Soil samples taken at the site showed results below the maximum limits allowed by the Law 24,051 on Hazardous Waste and current complementary regulations in Argentina.

Nevertheless, monitoring and possible remediation work will be carried out by the landowner or responsible party.
