A new arrangement in the Pre-Delta National Park that strengthens the conservation of the Espinal and its ecosystems

The conservation of natural ecosystems added a new management tool in Entre Ríos. The National Parks Administration approved the definitive zoning of Campo Coronel Sarmiento, a sector incorporated after the original management plan of the Pre-Delta National Park.

This measure represents a significant advancement for the territorial organization of one of the most important protected areas in the province. Additionally, it establishes precise criteria to reconcile the preservation of biodiversity with activities of research, environmental education, and public use.

In this way, a pending process is completed since the incorporation of this property into the conservation system, consolidating a planning oriented to protect environments of high ecological value.

A natural refuge for the biodiversity of the Espinal

The Campo Coronel Sarmiento covers an area of 146 hectares and preserves representative environments of the Espinal ecoregion, one of the most characteristic ecosystems of Entre Ríos.

In this territory, native forests, shrublands, grasslands, and sand dunes develop, serving as a refuge for numerous species of wild flora and fauna. Moreover, these environments contribute to maintaining essential ecological processes for the health of regional ecosystems.

On the other hand, the area harbors mammals and other species of special conservation interest. The protection of these habitats strengthens the ecological connectivity within the Pre-Delta National Park and promotes the safe movement of fauna between different natural sectors.

Technical studies and participation to define the future of the area

The new planning was the result of work carried out during 2025 by the Protected Areas Program of the Central East (PAPCE), under the National Parks Administration.

For this purpose, field surveys, technical analyses, and cartographic studies were conducted to identify the environmental characteristics of each sector. Simultaneously, park rangers, conservation specialists, and technical teams involved in territorial management participated.

As a result, zones were defined for the strict preservation of the most sensitive environments and others oriented towards activities compatible with the conservation objectives. This differentiation will allow for a more efficient and sustainable management of the protected space.

The benefits of zoning for conservation

Zoning is a fundamental tool for organizing land use within protected areas. Thanks to this system, it is possible to establish which activities can be developed in each sector without compromising the integrity of the ecosystems.

Additionally, it facilitates the protection of fragile environments by limiting human interventions in priority areas for biodiversity. At the same time, it allows concentrating recreational, educational, and scientific activities in spaces specially prepared to receive visitors.

Another important benefit is that it improves long-term planning. With clear management rules, conservation teams can optimize resources, strengthen environmental monitoring and respond more effectively to threats such as fires, invasive species, or changes in land use.

A key step for the wetlands and ecosystems of Entre Ríos

The approval of this new zoning reinforces the comprehensive management of the Pre-Delta National Park, a strategic territory for the conservation of the wetlands of southern Entre Ríos.

Furthermore, the measure contributes to preserving natural landscapes that perform essential functions, such as water regulation, carbon storage, and the protection of regional biodiversity.

In a context of increasing environmental challenges, the zoning of Campo Coronel Sarmiento demonstrates the importance of planning the territory with ecological criteria. The initiative not only safeguards valuable ecosystems but also ensures that future generations can continue to enjoy one of the most important natural heritages of Entre Ríos.
