In the vast lands of the Cerrado of Goiás in Brazil, the giant armadillo stands out not only for its size but for its ability to modify the environment. This mammal, scientifically known as Priodontes maximus, has been described as a true ‘architect’ of the ecosystem thanks to the creation of underground burrows that benefit multiple species in the region.
The role of the giant armadillo as a shelter builder
A recent camera trap study has documented 654 sightings of 32 vertebrate species using these burrows. The research, conducted by Luana Silva Flores and Wellington Hannibal Lopes, spanned 596 days at the Serra da Fortaleza Wildlife Refuge, revealing how these underground tunnels are utilized by various forms of life.
The data shows that not only mammals like the Dasypus novemcinctus and Azara’s agouti use these spaces, but also birds, reptiles, and amphibians. This phenomenon highlights the importance of the giant armadillo as an ecosystem engineer, providing vital resources such as thermal shelters and resting areas.
Researchers observed species like the motmot Momotus momota interacting with the burrows in a way that suggests their use for nesting. This behavior, although not confirmed, underscores the role of these cavities as nesting opportunities.
The study also highlights that although 32 species were observed, not all resided permanently in the burrows. However, their interaction with them suggests a significant dependence on this environmental resource.
The discoveries in Serra da Fortaleza confirm previous findings in other regions such as the Pantanal and the Argentine Chaco, where the giant armadillo’s burrows also enrich the local biodiversity.
Importance of conserving the giant armadillo
The protection of Priodontes maximus is crucial, as its disappearance not only implies the loss of an individual but also of the burrows that serve many other species. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies this species as vulnerable, due to threats such as habitat fragmentation, hunting, and agricultural development.
