Illegal hunting of vicuñas in Jujuy is a concern, and controls are being reinforced: the most endangered species

The poaching of vicuñas in Jujuy has increased and raises concerns. It is a serious threat to the wildlife in the province, and for that reason, authorities have started implementing new measures.

Malvina Quintana, Director of Biodiversity and Protected Areas at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, warned about the situation.

Among the most affected species, besides vicuñas, are the collared peccaries (vulnerable), the Chacoan peccary (endangered), the brocket deer, and the tapirs, both classified as vulnerable.

In the Jujuy Puna region, the most critical issue is the illegal hunting of vicuñas, animals protected by national and provincial laws.

Concern and Action Regarding Poaching in Jujuy

“Last week, we conducted an operation in the Yavi area with Environmental Prosecution, Infantry, Border Patrol, and the Provincial Police, where we found skinned and dying vicuñas after being hunted for their fiber. It’s a very sad sight,” Quintana stated in an interview with the Despertar 630 news outlet.

The official explained that vicuña fiber is highly prized in Europe, attracting poachers, even from neighboring countries. However, indigenous communities carry out legal shearing known as chakus, under strict health control and state oversight, prioritizing animal welfare and the legal commercialization of the fiber.

Joint Measures for Protection

The Ministry of Environment works in coordination with the Ministry of Security, provincial forces, and local communities. The implemented measures include:

  • Specialized inspectors for wildlife.

  • Meetings with the Andean Commission of Vicuña Management Communities (CAMVY).

  • Permanent surveillance patrols.

  • Distribution of communication equipment in signal-free areas to expedite response to alerts.

Quintana emphasized that constant presence in the territory and working with communities are key to detecting and stopping poachers. “The goal is to protect our wildlife and stop those who, for economic gain, destroy the natural heritage of the people of Jujuy,” she stated.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change urged the population to report any signs of illegal hunting of vicuñas or other species. “Every minute counts to prevent animal suffering and stop this illegal activity,” Quintana emphasized.

The Importance of Protecting the Vicuña, a Symbol of the Puna

The vicuña is a cultural and natural emblem of the Andean region. Hunting it is not only a crime but also a direct threat to biodiversity and the cultural heritage of the communities that have protected it for centuries.

The Government of Jujuy, together with the communities of Inti Cancha and Cholacor, strengthen surveillance and control operations to ensure responsible management that benefits the entire region.
