Goodbye to Fireworks: The City of Buenos Aires Banned the Use of Audible Pyrotechnics

This weekend, the City of Buenos Aires banned the use of audible fireworks throughout its territory.

The measure aims to protect the health of vulnerable people, animals, and the environment in view of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The head of the Buenos Aires Government, Jorge Macri, announced the decision through his social media.

“We banned the use of audible effect pyrotechnics throughout the City. Sound pyrotechnics affect the health of the elderly, people with ASD, and babies,” the official stated.

The ban responds to a recurring request from residents in community meetings.

Additionally, it aims to specifically protect elderly adults, babies, people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and domestic animals.

Buenos Aires declares itself a “calm zone”, without audible fireworks

The Environmental Protection Agency (APRA) adjusted the current regulations following the request of the head of Government.

The first article of the resolution declares Buenos Aires as a “calm zone free of pyrotechnics”.

Article 4 of the decree signed by Macri prohibits “the use of pyrotechnic and noise devices in any event or show organized by the Public Sector of the City of Buenos Aires”.

There was already a 2020 resolution that defined a “calm zone” within a 100-meter radius of ecological reserves and hospitals. Now the measure has been expanded to the entire City.

The impact of the measure on animals and the environment

Audible fireworks cause severe consequences in dogs and cats.

Loud and sudden noises cause high levels of stress, anxiety, and fear in animals.

Dogs have an extreme auditory sensitivity that allows them to perceive sounds at greater distances than humans.

Explosions can cause them disorientation, tachycardia, and escape behaviors.

Although it may not always seem so, cats also face significant risks.

Their curiosity can lead them to approach pyrotechnic debris, increasing the risk of poisoning.

Additionally, in all animals, exposure to stress can worsen pre-existing diseases or cause severe anxiety episodes.

The exceptions to the ban

The regulations establish specific exceptions for certain uses. Excluded from the ban are:

  • Pyrotechnic devices for emitting distress signals
  • Use by Security Forces and Civil Defense
  • Activities that for safety reasons necessarily require their use

The Environmental Protection Agency’s mission is to protect environmental quality through planning and executing actions to comply with the City’s Environmental Policy.

Buenos Aires, towards more inclusive celebrations, without audible fireworks

The ban on audible fireworks in Buenos Aires is part of a growing trend towards more inclusive celebrations.

The goal is for the end-of-year festivities to be enjoyed without risking health.

As stated in Article 26 of the City’s Constitution, “the environment is a common heritage and everyone has the right to enjoy a healthy environment“.

The measure prioritizes visual alternatives without noise so that celebrations can continue without affecting vulnerable people or the welfare of animals.
