Challenge to the Salmon Farms: The Southern Chilean Town That Demanded the Removal of Cages from a Lake for Its Protection

The mayor of Frutillar, a town in the south of Chile, requested the removal of salmon farming cages from Lake Llanquihue.

The official, Javier Arismendi, argued that their presence is incompatible with the sustainable development of the ecosystem.

Salmon Farming in Chile: a Controversial Activity in Continental Lakes

The salmon farming industry is one of the most significant in Chile, but its impact on continental water bodies is causing growing environmental concern.

Frutillar is a town in the Los Lagos Region, in southern Chile, on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, one of the largest lakes in the country.

There, the municipal leader pointed out that the salmon farming centers affect an ecosystem considered fragile and of high heritage value.

“Lake Llanquihue is a symbol of our identity and a vital source for tourism, the environment, and the health of our neighbors,” declared Arismendi.

Because of this, it is not possible to continue allowing productive activities that generate negative impacts on the lake.

The Request: Responsible Relocation

Arismendi clarified that his stance does not seek to disregard the economic importance of the activity. The proposal aims at a relocation of operations outside continental lakes.

In particular, the municipality identified several reasons why it considers the presence of salmon farming cages in Lake Llanquihue incompatible:

  • Environmental impact on a fragile and strategic ecosystem
  • Impact on tourism, a central economic activity for the region
  • Risk to the health of communities that depend on the lake
  • Deterioration of the natural heritage of the Los Lagos Region

The mayor called on the Government and sectoral authorities to open a participatory dialogue. He requested the establishment of deadlines and concrete mechanisms for the removal of the cages, albeit with technical, environmental, and social criteria.

Chile: Regional Coordination to Defend the Lake from Salmon Farms

Arismendi reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to defending Lake Llanquihue. He announced that he will continue promoting coordination with other municipalities and citizen organizations in the region.

The goal is to protect this natural heritage for future generations, in a context where salmon farms in Chile face greater scrutiny for their presence in freshwater ecosystems.

The discussion about salmon farms in Chile and their coexistence with lake environments is gaining momentum in the south of the country. There, local communities, municipalities, and environmental actors are seeking a development model that prioritizes sustainability.
