S.O.S. Biodiversity: the critically endangered species Argentina is fighting to save in 2026

In 2026, environmental conservation in Argentina is at a turning point. The destruction of habitats, poaching, and the effects of climate change accelerate the risk of extinction of unique wildlife.

Next, we analyze the alarming situation of three emblematic species of our territory:

🔍 Profiles of critically endangered species

Species Main Habitat Major Threat
Aguará Guazú (Maned Wolf) Wetlands and northern grasslands Expansion of the agricultural frontier
Yellow Cardinal Open forests and spiny forests Illegal wildlife trafficking (pet trade)
Patagonian Frog Volcanic lagoons of Neuquén Introduction of exotic fish

1. Aguará Guazú: The giant of the grasslands

It is the largest of the South American canids. It stands out for its slender figure, notably long legs (adapted for walking on loose and flooded soils), and a striking black mane on the neck and shoulders. Its fur is reddish-orange, with a white throat and tail tip. Juvenile specimens are born almost black and change color as they grow.

2. Yellow Cardinal: Melodies in danger

A bicolor bird, yellow and black, famous for its pointed dark crest and melodic song of variable whistles. Males display yellow eyebrows and mustaches, while females show white and grayish tones on the chest. It avoids environments modified by humans and forages in pairs or family groups directly on the ground of native forests.

3. Patagonian Frog: Endemic survivor

This small amphibian is an endemic species that only exists in the lagoons of the volcanic plateau of Neuquén, mainly within the Laguna Blanca National Park. It is mostly aquatic, living among dense vegetation (such as the plant gambarusa) and its survival depends on a key biological factor: that the lagoons remain free of fish, their main predators.

X-ray of a silent environmental crisis

The loss of biodiversity in Argentina goes beyond these three names. The country has more than 9,000 species (18% of them native). The ecosystem is not only composed of photogenic animals like the jaguar or the capybara, but also of plants, fungi, and insects that regulate climate, humidity, and provide resources for health and food.

Matías Arrigazzi (Biodiversity Specialist at Greenpeace Argentina):

“While international organizations warn of an unprecedented crisis on a planetary scale, in the country the loss and impact on biodiversity translates to proper names, impunity of companies and governments, and deep scars on ecosystems that can hardly be remedied.”

Both direct factors (overfishing, water pollution) and indirect ones (extreme droughts and floods caused by climate change) push these environments to the limit.

The legal urgency: A unified regulation

The scientific diagnosis is clear: nature cannot wait for the times of politics. To save our fauna and native flora, experts point out that the urgent path is the creation of a Law of Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity.

This legal tool would allow:

  • Unifying criteria: Preventing a species from receiving a high level of protection in one province and being unprotected in another.

  • Deep reforms: Articulating the right to biological diversity with the property regulations of the Civil and Commercial Code.

The challenge is set, and actions must be executed today.
